What is the ELCA National Youth Gathering?

The Youth Gathering is a five-day event for High School Youth of the ELCA. The event happens every three years (exception: pandemic reschedule from 2021 to 2022) in a different city. The event includes a Mass Gathering every night where all ~30,000 people come together for speakers, music, worship, and more. There are 3 full event days where congregations rotate through service learning, interactive learning center, and a synod day. The service learning day is a service project somewhere in the city. The Interactive learning center is a large convention hall filled with all kinds of booths, workshops, inflatable courses, gift shops, and more. What are the dates for 2022?

Thursday, July 21 through Thursday, July 28.

We will spend Thursday July 21-24th in Duluth with our NE Synod and then travel together to Minneapolis July 24th-28th. The event officially starts Sunday evening with the first Mass Gathering and ends after a closing worship on Thursday morning. We anticipate being home late Thursday evening.

Who can go?

Youth in 8th-12th grade this current school year can attend the Gathering in 2022.

Where is the 2022 Gathering?

Minneapolis, Minnesota! The Mass Gatherings take place in the US Bank Stadium. The Interactive Learning Center will be at a convention center downtown. Hotels for participants will be spread across the city (we get our assignment in February).

What’s involved if our youth decides to go?

We are asking for consistent participation, including attending Gathering Bible Studies before the event, planning meetings, fundraiser(s), the Gathering itself, and at least one event after the trip for the congregation. If you are interested in attending but already know you have more than one schedule conflict, please talk to Pastor Sarah.

How much does it cost?

We are asking families to contribute $250 per youth participating. The Gathering will cost around $1000 per participant. This includes the registration costs, most food and lodging, transportation, and a few extras like T-shirts and pre Gathering activities. We will be fundraising and receiving support from the congregation. If you would like to learn about financial assistance opportunities to help cover the $250, please talk to Pastor Sarah.

How do we register?

Turn in $50 deposit and Registration Worksheet to Pastor Sarah by Oct. 17th. Registration can happen after this, but there may not be room and additional fees as registration prices increase.

What is the Gathering theme this year?

based on Ephesians 3:19 I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is. 

What about COVID?

At this time it is too soon to know what safety procedures will be in place at the Gathering. At a minimum, we know that the Gathering will follow all CDC, national, state of Minnesota, and city of Minneapolis protocols, whatever they may be in summer 2022. In the event that the Gathering must be canceled, there will be options about getting money back, including donating the money to the ELCA who has already invested a lot into this Gathering or a full refund.
